Today we are going to talk about a style of toasted beer that has been brewed since the 16th century in Germany, specifically in the region of Bavaria. Tradition says that this beer is called Märzen because it was brewed in March (März in German means March). It is believed that this toasted beer was consumed at Oktoberfest after maturing in bottles in cold caves or taverns until it reached its peak in late summer.
Characteristics of Märzen toasted beer
The first thing that stands out about Märzen toasted beer is its intense, bright, and crystalline color. Its aromas are sweet; caramel, toasted almonds, and cocoa. It has a delicious taste where the malting nuances prevail over the hops, evoking nuts, chocolate, and toasted bread. It pairs perfectly with intense flavors, suitable for barbecues, cured cheeses, nuts, and mushrooms.
Other Althaia references
This style of toasted beer is a classic in the world of craft beers made with care and dedication; and at Althaia, we wanted to offer it to you with an added bonus: our Mediterranean Märzen is gluten-free. So that everyone can enjoy this delicious toasted beer and thus enter the fascinating world of craft beer.
But since at Cervezas Althaia we are enthusiastic about beers that remind us of the last rays of sunshine at sunset on a Mediterranean beach, we suggest the following references:
- Mediterranean IPA: a craft beer with a brilliant honey color and thick, consistent foam that pairs perfectly with red meats, oily fish, strong cheeses, spicy sauces… And the truth is, it turned out very well. Rated as the Best IPA beer in Spain in 2019 and confirmed by other international awards.
- Mistral Double IPA: this bitter and very intense craft beer will be perfect for dishes with personality, spicy stews, and for red meats and cured cheeses that balance perfectly with its interplay of different malts. Not to brag (well, a little), but with this beer, we won the Gold Medal at the Barcelona Beer Challenge in 2017 and other awards in 2019 and 2020.
