Heliodora waited restlessly, her gaze fixed on the end of the road. As the last days of February arrived, her father would always return from the market bringing a very special gift: a shipment of fresh blood oranges. With the imposing mountain peaks still covered in snow, in the deepest, coldest part of winter, those intensely red, blood-colored citrus fruits seemed to magically announce the imminent arrival of warm spring breezes. The history and journey of orange trees in the Mediterranean lands is an epic spanning centuries. They arrived on our shores from distant China over a thousand years ago, when they were considered a bitter fruit intended primarily for medicinal uses and exotic condiments. They adapted so generously to their new home under our sun that they spontaneously produced a multitude of new and wonderful varieties until, in 1646, the celebrated Italian botanist Gian Battista Ferrari first described and documented the fascinating red pigment inside these citrus fruits. These beautiful varieties of blood oranges traveled for centuries on large sailing ships, gaining immense popularity throughout Europe thanks to their astonishing resistance on long sea voyages. Heliodora never forgot that aroma from her childhood, and the Mediterranean sun had reserved its greatest gift for her in Altea, where she finally reconnected with the orchards that had intrigued her since childhood. Now, every February, she goes to her century-old orchard with the same undiminished excitement to hand-pick the blood oranges that we carefully incorporate into this recipe. Heliodora is a refreshing Berliner Weisse style wheat beer, meticulously crafted following the ancient Prussian recipe that at the beginning of the 20th century was almost completely erased from the brewing map. A soft, light, and pleasantly tart gem, enriched with the color and soul of these very special citrus fruits: authentic Prussian tradition imbued with pure Mediterranean character.
