Good beer for a good cause: Althaia with Attack the Krab!!

Una buena cerveza por una buena causa: Althaia con Attack the Krab!!
Attack the Krab!! is the charity beer brewed by a different brewer each year, and for this 2019 edition at Althaia, we have prepared a refreshing Berliner Weisse to attack the crab with our best weapons. Each year, the funds raised are entirely allocated to research in the fight against cancer.

Behind this interesting initiative is 2D2Dspuma, with Susana and María leading the impliK2 project, which celebrates its 5th edition this year, and the collaboration of Edgar Rodríguez Tello, sommelier at El Racó d’en Cesc, and the unconditional support of Jorge Solana, from the Cerveriana blog. The charity project is also backed by an extensive network of collaborators, which grows every year and includes different brewers, industry members, specialized media, designers, companies, printers, and committed customers.

This year we have the honor of being responsible for brewing the 2019 edition, and for this, we have prepared a very special Berliner Weisse, with barley malt, wheat flakes, watermelon, and spearmint and 4.2% alc./vol. The label for this beer had the collaboration of our designer Martutxa Casares, who inspired us for the name of this edition as "MarTutxa Krabsares."

The batch, brewed on April 1st and 2nd at our facilities, totals 1000 L, which will be distributed in about 1700 bottles of 33 cl and 16 barrels of 30 L through 2D2Dspuma.

Why Attack the Krab!!?

The name, Attack the Krab!!, means "attack the crab." It's spelled with a K as a nod to the impliK2 brand, the organizer of the initiative. The word "cancer" comes from the Latin "cancer," which in turn comes from the Greek word "karkinos" (καρκίνος), meaning 'crab'. The metaphor by which the term 'crab' comes to mean 'cancer' is explained by the resemblance of the branching of a cancerous tumor to the legs of a crab and its way of adhering to healthy tissue.

Where do the funds raised go?

Until March of this year, the funds raised were used to finance the activities of the ovarian cancer research group at VHIR – Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca. This year, the charity beer expands its objectives and also allocates a portion to the leukemia research group at the Institut de Recerca del Hospital de Sant Pau.
